BRUISED fruit and tattered foliage is all that remains of a Broke vineyard's once bulging vines after a hailstorm ripped through the region last week.

Robert Kennedy, of Beyond Broke vineyard, is assessing the fallout of last Tuesday's hailstorm with the full extent of the damage to his $300,000 crop not known until the January harvest begins.

What do Catherine Hill Bay and Cessnock have in common? I'll get to that question in a minute. There is a very interesting public debate happening at the moment. You can't help but think the Labor Party is conducting a concerted campaign to get rid of Cessnock Council.

A plan by Wollombi Valley Landcare Group to have the Livestock Health and Pest Authority plant sodium monofluoroacetate, known as 1080, has prompted a group to circulate a petition against what they see as unnecessary harm to domestic dogs and wildlife.

As most people would know there was a widely publicized issue of verbal abuse of a female touch judge at a Cessnock rugby league match a couple of weeks ago. The Newcastle Herald made big headlines out of it and it reflected badly on the whole community.

THE 27th Singleton Art Prize will be getting off to great start tonight, when the doors open at 7pm.
There will be wine, nibbles and more than 600 quality art works on show, and the exhibition will continue throughout the weekend.

An estimated 1000 hours of volunteer hours were needed to get the art exhibition up and running and while there will be some sighs of relief come Tuesday morning, the excitement of tonight's grand opening overshadows the past months of work.

MAJOR Australian gas provider Santos is investing $476 million to buy coal seam methane gas resources in the Gunnedah Basin.

On 6th and 7th April we had a couple of people outside AGL Energy Headquarters at 101 Miller Street, North Sydney. They were there for a couple of hours as the employees arrived, and for a couple of hours at lunch time each day. One with signs and handing out pamphlets. The other as the Grim Reaper, which is how we see AGL ENERGY in respect of its actions at Broke in regard to the water tables and in relation to the risk of methane gas explosion and migration. We intend to make random appearances at the AGL ENERGY offices.

Countryfest is coming

THE countdown to Countryfest has begun with Australia's best wife-carriers ready and rearing to take the Singleton Showground stage in hopes of being crowned Australia's best for 2009.
The PBR rodeo is no longer and the Muay Thai boxing didn't eventuate, but heck who cares because wife-carrying is back and the date set for this year's showdown is Saturday, May 2.

With only six weeks until the hilarity hits Singleton, the competition is already building momentum with Countryfest organisers already in receipt of a record number of entries for Australia's wife carrying titles.

Drilling must stop

A DELEGATION will be sent to Minister for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald, seeking to stop any drilling in the Broke Valley by Sydney Gas.

The delegation will be seeking that the Broke Fordwich winegrowing region be excised from the petroleum exploration leases held by Sydney Gas.

In addition to this, it will be seeking that no further activities be undertaken on the two wells adjacent to the village of Broke currently owned by Sydney Gas until a full environmental assessment is undertaken on the wells, and terms of reference on a water study to be undertaken is agreed to by the project's community consultative committee.

THE Victorian Bushfire National Day of Mourning will be observed by churches throughout the Hunter Region tomorrow. The majority of churches will include memorial prayers and reflection in their regular Sunday services.

Wollombi once again celebrated Australia Day in true country style at the Wollombi Markets. There were plenty of stalls with produce and bric and brac. Hot food and ice creams, plants and clothing. The volunteers did a great job! From the allocations of stall sites, serving the teas and coffee, cooking at the barbeque, baking cakes, cleaning up the grounds afterwards and standing at the gate with the donation bucket!
