As you would be aware I have received a letter from the Minister for Planning the Hon. Tony Kelly requesting Council provide reasons why you're elected Councillors should not be stripped of voting rights on local planning matters. I wrote back to the Ministers office requesting clarification of the concerns raised so we could respond to his letter. On 25 May the Minister provided details about issues raised in his first letter and he gave an extension of a further 21 days to respond. We are presently in the process of addressing those issues in detail and preparing a response for Council's consideration and endorsement before I forward it to the Minister prior to his deadline of 15 June.

The National Heart Foundation is launching Go Red for Women Campaign on Friday 11 June. Go Red for Women raises awareness about women and heart disease. The statistics regarding women and heart disease are startling. For instance, heart disease kills over 11,000 Australian women each year, which is four times higher than female deaths from breast cancer. Yet awareness is low, with the Heart Foundation research indicating that only 1 in 5 women recognise heart disease as the leading cause of death in women; many women believe heart disease only affects older men and, that many women believe the signs and risks of heart disease are obvious. The good news is that heart disease is largely preventable - you can reduce your risks by living a healthier lifestyle, aim for a healthy weight, reduce your intake of saturated fats and salt, quit smoking and be more physically active. I encourage residents to wear red on Friday 11 June in support of raising awareness of women and heart disease. For information about women and heart disease, go to www.gored@heartfoundation.org.au or call 1300 3627 87.

The end result will see a great extension to one of our premier recreation facilities. Peace Park attracts a large number of visitors from all over our LGA as well as further afield. The playground is expected to reopen on Friday 11 June, just in time for the long weekend.
