It was a sad day of the passing of Harold Sternbeck AM. Harold gave a lifetime of extraordinary service and achievement and through his strength of character and his integrity became one of the City's most highly regarded and respected citizen attaining Freeman of the City in 2009. Harold was a man of great humility and invariably referred to himself as "an ordinary fellow". If this was so, then Harold was an extraordinary "ordinary fellow" which is evident by his achievements. Harold was a true gentleman and a great man. He will be sadly missed by the Cessnock community.

Congratulations to Janette Jackson and John Retallick each were made a Paul Harris Fellow at the recent Rotary Club of Cessnock's Presidential Changeover Dinner. The Paul Harris Fellow award represents the Clubs contribution of two lots of $1000 US dollars to the Rotary Foundation which does humanitarian work around the world; in Australia Clubs recognise individuals for significant contributions in making such awards.

A specially designed free workshop for researching your family history is to be held at Cessnock City Library on Wednesday 4 August from 10.30am until 12.30pm. Heather Garnsey from the Society of Australian Genealogists designed the workshops to assist family history researchers to access useful resources. On Friday 16 July I attended the launch of "Painting the Australia Iconic" by Colin Harrison. On display were 6 paintings of early BHP complex and its workers which are very pertinent to the area. The paintings are a very positive contribution to the Hunter's history which should be recorded visually and Colin is hoping that Cessnock Art Gallery will exhibit them in 2011. It apparently took Colin four months to complete and the paintings were based on very old black and white photographs discovered by Col and his wife Janece in Mayfield. The launch was very well attended.

I recently attended the Wollombi promotion video launch promoting Wollombi as a destination to experience country lifestyle, great food, fine wine and many activities to enrich the senses of tourists visiting the Wollombi Valley. Wollombi is a unique township with magnificent historic buildings and churches. A great place to visit and stay... like many other areas of our LGA.
