We said goodbye to another Cessnock icon last week with the passing of John Hall. John is a well known businessman in Cessnock with both the TM & KTM motorcycle outlets.
John's passion for motorcycles and his devotion to the sport is known locally, nationally and internationally. John was known as the father of the Australian ISDE event and put Cessnock on the map when he managed to bring the world class ISDE event and many overseas riders to our City in 1992; the events first venture outside of Europe. John was recognised for his efforts and awarded Citizen of the Year in 1993.
John will be sadly missed by both the Cessnock and Australian Motorcycling community.

I recently attended the Awards Presentation Ceremony for the Central Hunter Local Area Command. It was a privilege to be invited and speak at this special occasion. The award recipients are congratulated on meritorious service above and beyond the call of regular duty. This exemplary service is of a high calibre of which the award and certificate winners should be very proud.
I congratulated 9 award and certificate winners from the Cessnock LGA and I am proud that Cessnock City Council supports the NSW Police force and we support our Police Officers who provide a safe community in which we can live.

Council was recently recognised for tackling mobile phone e-waste along with over 300 local Councils across Australia. At the awards ceremony during the National General Assembly of Local Government Hunter Resource Recovery (HRR) representing Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Cessnock City Councils, were recognised for outstanding achievement and received 2010's National Excellence Award.
HRR was recognised for the group's innovative work to engage local communities in recycling mobile phones together with other e-waste and reusable items through their lifecycle kerbside collections and e-waste drop off days.
Congratulations to Cessnock City Council and Hunter Resource Recovery on this great initiative and for being recognised in winning the National Excellence Award.

Congratulations to the four High Schools who took part in the Mayoral High School Debate on Thursday 22 July. I have been told that the debate was very close and it was a hard decision to determine to the two schools who would contest the final.
Heat A & Heat B both had interesting topics and all four schools presented excellent arguments on their topic. However only two schools could proceed to the final. Kurri Kurri and Cessnock High Schools debated in the final on Wednesday 28 July at Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre.
The winning school for our inaugural High School Debate was Cessnock High School. We are extremely fortunate to have such academically talented young people in our LGA showing their skills in the Mayoral Debate, Mayoral Challenge and the Mayoral Scholarships which all promote our young people. Thank you to our sponsors Cessnock Achievement Centre and Rover Motors Pty Ltd for sponsoring this inaugural debate.

Thank you to our great sponsors Cessnock Achievement Centre, Cessnock Ex-Services Club, DLW Corporate Services, Hope Estate, Hunter Resource Recovery, McDonalds Family Restaurant Cessnock, Rover Motors Pty Ltd and Sternbeck Real Estate Pty Ltd, without your sponsorship the Challenge could not go ahead.
