I recently attended the inaugural Anzac Memorial Church Service which was held at St Paul's Anglican Church in Kurri Kurri on Sunday evening 18 April. The Service was very stirring and all who attended were very impressed with the presentation of it. The aim of the service is to create an atmosphere where RSL members can join with their own family members as well as family members of those who did not return or died since. This great initiative was developed by the Anglican Parish of Mount Vincent - Weston and the Kurri Kurri RSL Sub branch. The organisers have mentioned to me they would like to establish it as an annual event and I am sure all who attended would agree with this.

Earlier in the year I was approached by the Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University to support elected women in Cambodia through the Bicycles for Democracy campaign to provide funding for a bicycle. Last week I received a letter of thank you from the University and photos of a ceremony which was held at the Ministry of Interior in Cambodia on Friday 26 March, where the Hon. Chou Bun Eng, Secretary of State, Ministry for Interior, and Ms Nanda Pok, Executive Director of Women for Prosperity at the National Round Table for Local Government presented the women with their bicycles. There are 54 Councillors in the Women's Network, and they have purchased 45 bicycles with promises of two or more towards their target. It was pleasing to provide my personal support of the cost of a bicycle for this valuable program facilitating engagement of women in the democratic governance of their country. For further information on this project go to their website on www.ifsa-butler.net.

Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre has been showcasing many exciting stage productions since it opened and I have attended the majority of those productions. The show Sounds of the Spectrum to be played on Friday 14 May at the Centre is one I highly recommend. I applaud the sponsors of this show as funds raised from this production will provide Austism resources for our local schools. As a former Principal I am aware of the need for additional resources to support schools dealing with Austism Spectrum in their class rooms. The program as advertised should appeal to a wide range of age groups. I have purchased my tickets and I encourage all to attend and support this excellent cause. For bookings go to Council's website www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au or phone 4990 7134.

Council is holding another FREE Microchip Day at Kurri Kurri Animal Shelter off Mitchell Avenue Kurri Kurri on Saturday 8 May between 10 am and 2pm. By law all dogs and cats should be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or at the point of sale and or give away. I encourage residents to have their dogs and cats microchipped on the day and the bonus of this is that it is FREE.

Council has been informed by the RTA that triangular road markings or 'Dragon's Teeth' markings are proposed to be painted at the start of each school zone in NSW and will be installed in school zones on a local government area (LGA) basis. 'Dragon's Teeth' markings further increase the visibility of school zones for motorists and are proposed to provide a constant reinforcement to slow down to 40kmh around schools between 8am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm till 4pm. The markings should be rolled out to all of the NSW's 10,000 school zones by the end of 2010.

The second Sunday in May is an important date to remember...Mothers Day. Don't forget to thank your mother for her great contribution, her love and support to her family on this special day.
