Save Cessnock Rally, Monday 24th May, 6-30PM Cessnock  Performing Arts Centre

A coalition of political parties and community members are joining forces to stage a rally in support of the local community of Cessnock retaining its planning powers.

Representatives from The Greens, Liberal and Nationals along with independent Councillors and residents from North Cessnock, Abernethy and Ellalong will address the rally next Monday at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 6-30pm til 8-30pm. The political parties, which traditionally have different views on many issues, are all concerned that the ALP is playing politics with Cessnock Council.

A State Government inquiry begun in 2008 found evidence that some councillors may have participated in binding caucus votes on a range of issues.  The Council elections in September 2008 reduced the number of ALP Councillors from 7 to 4, and therefore they lost their majority on Council.

The newly elected Council has worked hard to implement all the recommendations from the  Department of Local Government and is performing much more strongly than in the past.

'Kerry Hickey was Minister for Local Government from 2003 to 2005 and did nothing. Now that the community has voted the Labor majority out some people in Cessnock and Kurri perceive he is backing this plan by the Planning Minister for political reasons.' said Greens Councillor James Ryan.

Liberal Councillor Cordelia Burcham said 'The local Councillors work hard on behalf of the residents. We expect a big crowd on Monday night.'

National Party candidate for Cessnock and local Councillor Neil Gorman said 'It is good to see so many people and Councillors united on this issue. It is undemocratic for the State Government to take away Councils power, particularly without giving detailed reasons.'

Residents  from Ellalong, North Cessnock and Abernethy will also address the rally.

Independent Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ian Olsen will Chair the meeting.
