In times of economic difficulty I am pleased to advise that Cessnock City Council has delivered a balanced budget for 2010-2011 financial year and has maintained its level of service across all facets of Council's operations, in some cases increasing its funding commitment in high priority areas such as roads with the total budget for next year $81 million. An important part of the budget for residents is that Council has provided additional funds for services and facilities. For further information you can find copies of the Management Plan and the Budget on Council's website, www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au and in hard copy at the Cessnock and Kurri Kurri Libraries and Council's Customer Service Centre.

I recently attended the 47th Annual Weston Art Show which was held at Weston Civic Centre. The quality of work by the artists was outstanding and I must mention the art by our local school children was exceptional. The display held approximately 500 artworks. The major prize was awarded to Wangi Wangi Artist Bruce Naylor for his painting "Salt Pans". Congratulations to Bruce, the many artists who provided their works and to the hardworking committee who contributed to this magnificent display.

On Tuesday 29 June I attended Centrelink Jobs Expo Maitland at Maitland Showground. The Expo was designed to create a "jobs marketplace" bringing together Local Employment Coordinators, employment service providers, Centrelink, employers and job seekers. The Expo was an opportunity for employers, industry groups, recruitment and training providers to participate in a local community event that provides people with access to job vacancies and information about options that enhance employability. I found the Expo very informative and it was well attended by the general public and employment agencies from Cessnock.
