I recently attended a very pleasant evening put on by The Hunter Domestic Violence Support and Advisory Services for their inaugural 'Reclaim the Night' which was held in the grounds of the PCYC. Reclaim the Night is an International and National event where women reclaim the night, to ensure they can walk safely and wear whatever they choose. It is hoped that this initial event will grow to become an annual event.

On Saturday 30 October I attended the 20th Anniversary of the annual Wollombi Corroboree. More than 500 people descended on a Wollombi property to see a celebration of culture featuring traditional dancing around an open fire. Regarded as a crucial link in keeping Aboriginal customs alive, the Corroboree marked its 20th year. Ngemba tribe member, dancer Andrew Snelgar, from Raymond Terrace, and more than 70 dancers from about eight tribes took part. Congratulations to the organising committee on a great day event.

TAFE NSW - Hunter Institute recently held the inaugural Year Six Try-A-Trade at the Kurri Kurri Campus. Try-A-Trade enables students to gain an insight into a variety of trade careers. The event enabled Year 6 students from local Schools to experience 'hands on' activities within 27 different Vocational areas. The event was well attended by teachers, students and their parents or guardians. Another great initiative for the youth of our City.

Kurri Kurri Beyond 2030 Public Forum was recently held and was well attended by residents at the Kurri Kurri Golf Club. A group of planning students from the University of NSW gave excellent examples of urban design ideas and out of the square thinking on the future of Kurri Kurri over the next 10 to 20 years. The presentation was also supported by an overview on the Hunter Expressway.
