Thursday 9 December is Council's Christmas Carols 'Carols in the Park' event.  Come along and enjoy a night of great entertainment and hear Cessnock East Public School Choir along with our many talented local artists who will put on a wonderful evening of Christmas music.  Santa will make a special visit for the young and not so young.  Bring along a seat, (this year there will be no seats provided), a picnic blanket and a hamper.  The Rotary Club of Cessnock Wine Country will be providing food and drink for sale.  For further information on the Carols phone my office on 4993 4210.

I am calling on the kindness of our community to give a helping hand to the Love family.  The sudden loss of a wife and mother, Donna Love, leaves Mark and his eight children to deal with this tragic loss.  An auction is being held on 18 December at East Cessnock Bowling Club commencing at 6 pm to raise money for the family.  Cash donations can also be made to the NAB for the Love Family Trust and contributions for the auction can be forwarded to Mama's Café Vincent Street Cessnock or East Cessnock Bowling Club.  For further information on the auction and Trust Fund please contact Kerrie Meyn on 49902555 or Marlene Hartog on 49901046.

Miss Emily Angwin was recently crowned Miss Cessnock.  Emily has just completed her fifth-year law degree at the University of Newcastle, and hopes to land a job as a criminal lawyer in the next 12 months.  Emily would eventually like to establish her own law practice and write a true crime book.  Congratulations Emily and we look forward to your participation in our many Mayoral events.

On Tuesday 30 November our four (4) Hall of Fame Inductees were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Inductees were Jack Lennard, Kenneth Neate, Frank Rickwood OBE and Don Schofield.  The morning was attended and enjoyed by approx 60 people.  The Hall of Fame was established to recognise those people with a strong association with the communities of the Cessnock LGA who have achieved prominence in their chosen field of endeavour.  Our inductees will be recognised by the placement of a plaque in a town or village with which he or she is most strongly associated.  In this way, the breadth and diversity of the members of the Hall of Fame can be shared throughout our communities.

I recently attended the official opening of Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri SPL Reprocessing Facility.  This great initiative represents a new era in environmental sustainability with gains for the environment, for end-users of products and for the aluminium industry.  Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri is an important industry partner and provides vital jobs for our community.

Congratulations to Mai-Wel Group on their success at the recent E-cycling Program Industry Awards.  Winning two major industry awards:

  • 2010 Yellow Pages Award for Fastest Growing Not for Profit Business and
  • 2010 Yellow Pages Award for Most Innovative Business is exceptional

This service is essential in our region and addresses a major local environmental challenge and provides employment opportunities for people with a disability.
