I was recently accompanied by Council's Economic Development Manager representing Council at the Launch of the 2011 Landcom Lower Hunter Civic Design Awards in Port Stephens. The Awards commenced in 1989. It is good to see all the Lower Hunter Councils collaborating to recognise excellence in design, sustainability and innovation. Cessnock hosted the Awards last year and this year the honour is with Port Stephens. The winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony on 4 November. Ultimately it is important to remember that it is not just the winners that count but everyone that works in the planning and building sectors that make these Awards a reality.

Recently Council's Community Planning Coordinator, Natalie Drage and Councils Youth Service Co-ordinator, Will Doran, presented a paper at a conference organised by the Victorian Safe Communities Network and the Australian Institute of Criminology. Natalie and Will were joined by Youth Liaison Police Officer, Central Hunter Local Area Command, Senior Constable Michael Steele. Their paper entitled Smart Choices, a six hour pilot program developed and delivered within two local high schools, to 162 students, aged 12 to 13 years. The sessions were facilitated by experienced human service professionals and the key topics included drugs and alcohol, violence and bullying. An understanding of the students' knowledge of the harms associated with alcohol and drug use. In summarising the findings the majority of students felt the program empowered them to say no to drugs and alcohol and most (95%) felt they had learnt something from the program. Congratulations Natalie, Will and Michael on an excellent program to assist our youth.

The Performing Arts Centre was a hive of activity during the last two weeks with the talented young performers from Hunter Region Drama School presenting ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The performances were well attended with everyone commenting on the high standard of talent we have among our young people. This was a truly family oriented event with the audience young and old totally mesmerised. A particular favourite was the caterpillar who was a joy to watch and I'm sure that we will see her performing for years to come!!
The evening of Saturday 16th saw the centre come alive to the sounds of Edith Piaf performed by Brisbane songstress Margy Rose. This was a truly magical evening with the audience transfixed, applauding and wanting more. I believe that Margy is keen to return to the centre in 2012 as she was so impressed with the venue and warmth of the audience.
Wednesday 27 April sees HIT Productions, the company that gave us the outstanding production of Driving Miss Daisy in 2010, return to CPAC with Furiously Fertile. A new contemporary Australian play about single women, biological clocks, reluctant men and the healing powe
