During  a recent inspection of Cunneens Bridge it became apparent that several timber components have deteriorated significantly since the last structural testing undertaken in March 2007 which led to imposition of the current 9 tonne load limit. Consequently it has been determined to reduce the bridge load limit to 4 tonnes pursuant to Section 115 Roads Act , 1993 , pending the outcome of planned capacity testing of the bridge scheduled on 28/29 April 2009.

This reduction to 4 tonnes will be effected next week once signs become available. It is expected that this change will have serious consequences for some users , however public safety is considered to outweigh any inconvenience.

Traffic classifiers will again be installed across Paynes Crossing Road once the signs have been adjusted to monitor compliance with this load limit reduction. If necessary, consideration will be given to implementing further measures to physically restrict  heavy vehicle access onto the bridge.

During the planned closure of the bridge on 28/29 April  some structural improvements will be undertaken to help safeguard the structure and its load carrying capacity.
