INSIDE ART
Finishes on Sunday 26th April. Don't miss it!
What a great experience for all who have visited this stunning exhibition to date! Aboriginal inmates have produced over 50 vibrant artworks for the annual "Inside Art" exhibition at the Wollombi Cultural Centre.
Out of all the political conflict and industrial turmoil over the privatisation of the Cessnock Correctional Complex, creativity has risen like a Phoenix. The long suffering and enduring spirit of the Koori inmates and their resilience, is demonstrated in their beautiful paintings of native animals, elders, totems and dreamtime stories, ceramics and didgeridoos. There are also works from St Helliers, Muswellbrook. Open week-ends 11am to 4pm
437 THE DIVINE GESTURE
Sculpture in Stone by ROSS FLETCHER
OPENING on Friday, June 5th at 5pm at the Wollombi Cultural Centre
Exhibition dates June 5th - 21st Weekends/Wednesdays 10am to 4pm
"Earlier this year, I had the urge to hold a solo exhibition and, also, to travel to Carrara, Italy, for a marble sculpting class. I had about 2 months to put a show together. One good thing I've learnt from doing local theatre is the beauty of a deadline. So littleTime. Regular client commitments, bills to pay and dogs to pat, suppose I'd better eat something. So I'm dropping as much work as possible and picking up my chisels as often as I can.
What is a divine gesture?
It's an everyday thing, offering someone a cup of tea, smiling at someone in passing, a simple exchange that stirs some feelings in you - good or bad. I put some magic numbers in front to give the title some symbolic empowerment to me so as to pass it on to you, the viewer, through the work.
I'm open to inspiration from everywhere and everything. For example, I got a great idea from the bubbling paint in the bathroom. I'm hoping this show will be a good springboard for my planned trip to Italy for a marble sculpting course and the educational rewards gained from bathing in an another country's rich artistic history. I look forward to sharing some marble work with you next year.
This will be a show of new works, and hopefully a couple with Michelle Loadsman's mosaic touch . Anyway, with the skills I have gathered so far, this will be my divine gesture to you, spontaneous and simple."
