The Salvation Army is marking its 100th year in Cessnock with a weekend of celebration on 16 and 17 July.  On Saturday, the Parramatta Band will march down Vincent Street at 10am and that night, you will have the opportunity to see the Band together with the East Cessnock Choir and tenor soloist Murry Mayday at the Performing Arts Centre, starting at 7pm.

I urge you to show your support for the Salvation Army, which does so much for our community, by joining with them to celebrate their centenary at the Performing Arts Centre.

******

Speaking of the Performing Arts Centre - we need more volunteers for the front of house operations.  As you would know, centres such as ours rely on volunteers to look after patrons when they are in the foyer area and then to help them find their seats in the theatre.  If you are interested and can spare a little time, please contact the Performing Arts Centre on 4990 7134.  Even if you can only help out occasionally - every little bit helps.

The NSW/ACT Regional Achievement & Community Awards are now calling for nominations.   The Awards provide an opportunity for community groups, businesses and individuals to receive recognition and acknowledgement for a job well done and I encourage everyone to consider nominating an individual or organisation.  Categories for the Awards are

  • The Crown Lands Crown Reserve Trust Award
  • The Crown Lands Community of the Year Award
  • The Office of Trade, Business and Industry Business Development Organisation Award
  • The Office of Trade, Business and Industry Events and Tourism Award
  • The Salvation Army Employment Plus Business and Employment Award
  • The Peabody Environment and Landcare Award
  • The Prime Super Regional and Rural Development Award
  • The Essential Energy Regional Service Award

Did you know that Cessnock City Library provides a home delivery service to individuals and institutions in the Cessnock LGA where residents are confined to their homes for medical reasons?  There are a wide range of resources available, with large print books, audio books, magazines, DVDs and CDs being the most popular.

People with Macular Degeneration are also able to access free usage of a Navigator via the Home Library or "walk-in" service.  The Navigator is a 'low tech', hand-held and portable technology that reads books aloud.

If you would like further information about the Home Library Service or the Navigators please contact the Home Library Officer at Cessnock City Library on 4993 4399.
