On Wednesday 3 August I officially launched the 125th anniversary of the discovery of the Greta Coal Seam by Professor TW Edgeworth David in 1886 at Edgeworth David Park in Abermain. The launch was the beginning of a month long celebration of the River of Black Gold Festival to acknowledge this significant occasion.

Brian and I attended the celebrations for three significant milestones which included the 125th Anniversary of Greta Coal Seam, the 100th Anniversary of Steam Locomotive No 10 and the 30th Anniversary of Hunter Valley Training Co Pty Ltd. We travelled by passenger train pulled by the beautifully restored steam locomotives No. 10 & No. 18. We departed from East Greta Junction and journeyed to Neath where we dined at Neath Hotel before returning by train to East Greta Junction near Telarah in Maitland. It was an enjoyable and memorable day. Many train enthusiasts lined vantage points along the route to photograph the event. Thank you to the organisers for a job well done and to the Hon. Milton Morris AO for inviting us for this special occasion.

On Saturday 6 August I attended the unveiling of family plaques on the Community Wall in Rotary Park Kurri Kurri and the opening of the newly refurbished Visitor Information Centre in Kurri Kurri. Both important events were well attended by family members and community representatives. I must mention that our City is very fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers for not only these events and the running of the Visitor Information Centre but throughout our LGA. Without the help of volunteers our many events and projects would not happen.

The Customer Service Awards were held on Friday 5 August at Cessnock Rugby League Supporters Club. The atmosphere of the room was magical and I applaud the Club on the magnificent and professional setting for these prestigious awards. Congratulations to all the nominees and in particular to the winners. Again this year the standard of nominees was outstanding and it would have been very hard to determine the individual winners and runners-up for each of the categories.

Mt View High School's MADD production was a great success. The students performed brilliantly.

It was great to see a full hall for the information evening on Autism presented by the local Strive Group last Tuesday. All who attended gained a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by persons who suffer from and/or care for people with Autism.

The Community Vineyard Visioning exercise is underway to capture and understand the goals and priorities of the community for the Vineyards District. The public forums have been well attended and the online forum at www.vineyardsvisioning.com.au is open for input from community members.
