Cessnock Greens Councillor Chris Parker successfully moved that the operating hours of the Kurri Animal Shelter are to be increased to five hours per day.
Cessnock Council is the only Lower Hunter Council which still operates its own pound. Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens all pay other organisations to provide their pound services.
Cessnock Council had until now been opening for only one hour per day and Council had received multiple complaints from animal carers that animals were being unnecessarily euthanased because would be owners could not attend the pound in opening hours.
Councillor Parker, who has a long history as an animal carer and providing a home for abandoned animals, congratulated the Council Officers for producing a thorough report which investigated all the issues.
"I look forward to the Kurri Pound being open five hours per day and three hours on Saturday. I look forward to more of the stray dogs which our rangers have to pick up off the streets finding a warm and caring home."
The resolution moved by Councillor Parker will also see Cessnock Council continue to investigate building a new facility and contracting the service out to a private operator.
