On Sunday 28th March, the Wollombi Valley Anglican Community dedicated the refurbished gate and lamp at the entry to St John's Church, Wollombi. The gate is now complemented by two hand crafted sandstone pillars created by local stone mason, Albert Kraan.

The lamp (circa 1862) above the gate had deteriorated to such an extent that it was beyond repair. What seemed like a relatively simple renovation turned into a major task. After much persistent research due to so few available craftsmen currently adept at repairing antique lamps, an artisan was found, John Gannon of Braidwood N.S.W, who was able to create a replica of the original from the remains of the original. The finished lamp, gate and sandstone pillars enhance and return the entry to this beautiful 161 year old Church to its former splendour.

The erection of the sandstone pillars was made possible by a bequest from the late Mrs. Lurline Cooper (more recently from Cessnock but who also had historical family ties to the Wollombi Valley, having previously lived with her husband Albert at what is now the Brownings property on Paynes Crossing Road) who will be remembered and thanked at this dedication. The timber posts were donated by Ken Sweetman of Sweetmans Timbers.

The Church Community celebrated the gate's renovation and additions made possible by the late Mrs. Cooper, the Sweetman family, the skilled hands of John Gannon and Albert Kraan and members of the Church community, notably Brian Sherlock and John Nicol.
