Cessnock High School
Cessnock High School is a great school where 'what e'er we do, do well'.
We have a fine tradition at Cessnock High School of providing learning opportunities for students in Cessnock that goes back to the laying of the foundation stone in 1937.
We are a large school for 681 students - there is plenty of room and no crowding. We have small class sizes, and most of our teachers have home rooms.
And we are able to cater for all the needs of all students including the academic, the vocational, those who try their hardest, those who need extra help in literacy and those with a disability.
We have a fine record of academic achievement with the highest U.A.I. (Janelle Watts: 97) in the Cessnock Local Government Area in 2005. We scored the highest growth in numeracy within the region between Year 7 (2004) and 8 (2005) as measured by the SNAP tests, and we scored the third highest growth in literacy within the region between Year 7 (2004) and Year 8 (2005) as measured by the ELLA Test. All Year 8 students results in ELLA (2006) above the national benchmark. As a result we were one of only 10 schools in the Hunter Central Coast Region to win a literacy award during Literacy and Numeracy Week.
Our Vocational Education and Training program is exemplary. We provide seven Industry Curriculum Frameworks including Hospitality, Retail and Primary Industries. Many students secure traineeships, with 14 in place in Year 11 this year. 95-100% of students who complete the Higher School Certificate move into full-time work, or full-time training. We ensure that all students in Year 10 complete two weeks of work experience before the end of the year, and we have a comprehensive School-to-Work Program for all students in Year 7-10. Our school was awarded the Regional and State School Vocational Student of the Year (2005) - Kira Dodds (Heavy Vehicle), and we were also awarded the Regional School Vocational Student of the Year (2004) - Michael Ingle (Retail).
We have maintained a very reasonable fee structure for many years. Our school awards scholarships to highest achieving students within the school and our partner schools, and we are strongly supported with other scholarshipsby the Cessnock Business Community, and our by our former students. We also support the socio-economically disadvantaged.
We have a fine tradition of contributing to the Cessnock Community. We won the Effie O'Neill Debate, hosted by Rotary, against Mount View High School in 2006, and we demonstrate the HSC musical talents of our students through our Community Recital. Our school has been the host school at many community events in recent years - Australia Day, Seniors Week, and the Coca Cola Mayoral Awards.
We are very proud of our Indigenous Programs. We participate in Crocfest, other cultural activities including Wollombi Camps. We recognise and celebrate Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, and our Indigenous Dancers regularly perform in the school and in the community.
We have a caring, dedicated and very experienced staff. There is a mix of youth and experience with a significant number of staff being at the school for over twenty years. Students emotional needs are supported by our talented Health and Well-Being Team.
I commend Cessnock High School to you. Please do not hesitate in making further inquiries if there are matters you wish to clarify.
